South Elmsall War Memorial – Update

This week i have received a reply from Andrew Schoolar, the Planning and Conservation Officer for Wakefield Metropolitan District Council. He has confirmed that (as far as he is concerned) until the memorial is officially listed then “there are no planning controls over the alteration of inscriptions.” He also states that “there is potential historic interest and significance in the current version of the inscriptions” so whilst there is no listing issue with altering the inscription (at present) there may be some objection.

Technically if Megan O’Marr (the resident who has raised the issue) wishes to pursue the changes to the inscription she would simply need to forward evidence for the change onto Historic England and the War Memorials Trust for this to happen, funding however may be a different matter and is something which will need to be addressed in future.

I will contact Historic England and the War Memorials Trust on behalf of the resident and await a response prior to taking up the issue of funding with South Elmsall Town Council.
